Aloha everybody!!!
Here I am once again!
I have for you today a very interesting topic related to strengthening activities. Nowadays, textbooks are plenty of flat and boring activities in which students do not take part or get involved. So I’m going to turn normal activities into super learning missions!
I’m going to make 2 activities. In this post you will find the first one. Of course my activities are related to my project, as always. So, I will post two different entries, one for each mission. As I told you on my last post, my project collaborates with TheESLTimes so, this mission comes out from goals and initiatives that we both have in common.
To organize myself and to make it more visual, I made this mind map about the main goals of my super learning missions:
Once again, I’ve made this flyer with Canva. Am I the only one in love with Canva? It is so easy to use and mostly so helpful! I use it all the time, also for things that are not for my blog.
Well let get to my first super learning mission now.
As I said on the live conference, I’ve made collaborative project with my classmate Beatriz Rincón. Her open educational project (mencionar) is about healthy food for kids. I’ve choose her because I wanted to talk about the food in England and reflect about healthy habits which I find very useful for children to start making a habit on them.
I love when parents take part of the thing that their children are learning at school. I think that it is very important to get parents involve, so in class we are going to make a poster with the recipe of the traditional British fish and chips!
I’ve never understand why small children not like to eat fish, so this could be a good way of making them eat it. Fish is very important on a healthy diet.
The recipe will be something like this:
FISH AND CHIPS RECIPE BY THE CLASS OF 5 YEARS de Marina Amores
I also did this poster recipe with Canva. In class we will explain step by step how it is down and by taking turns the students will help the teacher make the recipe in a poster. They are still very small in pre-primary that’s way they can’t do it alone. But what they will do on their own is to write their name on the recipe. It is important that they star to write something with the computer to have a first contact. Also, children love to spot their name in the things they have done, and show them to their family.
After having our poster done, we will write the recipe behind.
This will be done on a Friday so they can all take the recipe home and make it with mum and dad or any grown up at home!
It will be great to have a British weekend!
The recipe:
Ingredients
For the Fish:
55g (2oz) plain flour/ all purpose flour
55g (2oz) corn flour/corn starch
Salt and pepper
1 teaspoon baking powder
75ml (1/3 cup) sparkling water
Thick white fish fillets
For the Chips:
1kg potatoes, peeled.
1 liter of oil.
Process
- In a large roomy bowl mix the all but two tablespoons of the flour, corn flour and baking powder. Season lightly with a tiny pinch of salt and pepper.
- Using a fork, and whisking continuously, add the beer and the water to the flour mixture and continue mixing until you have a thick, smooth batter. Place the batter in the fridge to rest for between 30 minutes and an hour.
- Cut the potatoes into 1cm slices then slice these into 1cm-wide chips. Place the chips into a colander and rinse under cold running water.Place the washed chips into a pan of cold water, bring to a gentle boil and simmer for 3 - 4 minutes. Drain carefully through a colander then dry with kitchen paper. Meanwhile, lay the fish fillets on a sheet of kitchen paper and pat dry. Season very lightly with a little sea salt.
4. Heat the oil to 120°C in a deep-fat fryer or large, deep saucepan. Blanch the chips a few handfuls at a time in the fat for a couple of minutes. Do not brown them. Once the chips are slightly cooked remove them from the fat and drain. Keep to one side.
- Place the 2 tbsp of flour reserved from the batter mix into a shallow bowl. Toss each fish fillet in the flour, shake off any excess, dip into the batter then carefully lower each fillet into the hot oil. Fry for approx 8 minutes or until the batter is crisp and golden, turning the fillets from time to time with a large slotted spoon.
- Using the same slotted spoon once cooked remove the fillets from the hot oil, drain on kitchen paper, cover with greaseproof paper and keep hot.Heat the oil to 200°C then cook the chips until golden and crisp about 5 mins. And ready to serve!!!
Once again thank you for reading! My second learning super mission will be soon available.See you soon!
